BeMed+ project

test

Objective

The BeMed+ project aims to consolidate the work carried out by BeMed over the last 10 years to reduce plastic pollution in the Mediterranean.

It brings together all of BeMed’s historical activities: supporting Mediterranean stakeholders and facilitating the sharing of experience within the Community of Practice and the Business Club.

New activities include the implementation of pilot actions in two targeted regions:

  • The tourist area of Monastir, Tunisia
  • The Shkumbin river watershed, Albania

These activities are being carried out in collaboration with IUCN and Surfrider Foundation Europe, BeMed’s founding members, as well as INCA (Albania) and Notre Grand Bleu (Tunisia) for the implementation of local actions.

Phase 1

Understanding the local context and issues

In 2024 and 2025, various studies will be carried out to identify : existing scientific data, the main sources of plastic leaks, initiatives and good practices deployed in other cities, political levers and brakes, social and economic needs to reduce dependence on plastic and limit leaks in the two pilot regions. Local stakeholders will be involved at every stage of these studies.

Phase 2

Taking action to reduce plastic pollution

Based on the results of the studies, an action plan will be consolidated and implemented over 2026 and 2027 to reduce the use of plastic and limit leaks into the environment in the tourism and sports sectors. A support programme for municipalities will also be put in place to improve waste management plans and incorporate reduction at source.
