Melina Taprantzi, founder of the non-profit organisation Wise Greece and winner of the Call for Micro-initiatives 2019, has been honoured this year by the Global SDG Award (Sustainable Development Goals, SDOs) as one of the 7 women in the world, whose activities contribute significantly to the achievement of the Global Sustainability Agenda 2030! This very prestigious award is given by the World Bank and the United Nations, and more specifically by the initiatives of UN Women and UNDP.
The SDGs and Her global competition showcases social enterprises that are managed by women and that support sustainable development goals in health, gender equality, food security for vulnerable groups, etc., while demonstrating great resilience and adaptability, as they have responded immediately and very successfully to the impacts of COVID-19.
The award-winning social enterprise Wise Greece supports Greek small food producers to promote their products through its network and converts its profits into food for people living below the poverty line. To date, it cooperates with more than 100 small producers, promoting more than 2,500 products and has distributed more than 50 tons of food to orphanages and soup kitchens throughout the country.
It should be noted that Wise Greece is the only non-profit organisation honoured by the SDGs award, among all the countries in Europe and Central Asia. This is the first time that this award has been given to a Greek organisation and it recognises the commendable efforts of both women and civil society organisations.
