The Schools Against Plastic project aims to use science to engage students at two elementary schools in the fight against plastic pollution. The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research will provide easy to follow protocols and a sample kit for school children who will become scientists for one year. Students will be working on beach litter sampling and microplastic analysis of marine organisms, to better understand the extent and impact of plastic pollution on the environment. The outcome will allow the creation of a beach litter baseline and an assessment of the microplastics ingested by marine life. The acquired data will then be presented to the local community to promote awareness with the potential to assess future waste management plans.
