The “From river to the Sea – let’s be plastic free” initiative advocates synergy between private, public and NGO sector to reduce pressure of pollution of the Adriatic Sea with plastic waste from the Cetina River in Croatia. It builds on the Cetina River Canyon – plastic free zone project results especially the provisions of the Decision on limiting the use of plastic within the boundaries of the Significant Landscape Cetina River Canyon.
This initiative will contribute to the realization of following provisions :
– Encourage the installation of containers for the separate collection of waste in the scope of the protected area and the separation of waste at the point of origin;
– Introduction of volunteers for reporting illegal waste disposal to responsible persons (Eco-patrol);
– Education of all subjects about the harmfulness of plastic through social networks and through workshops;
– Clear communication towards the participants regarding the activities and provisions from the Decision on limiting the use of plastic within the boundaries of the Significant Landscape Cetina River Canyon;
– Application of joint projects on the topic of plastic use reduction.
In order to implement those provisions, the initiative has been built around 3 work packages :
– the establishment of an Eco-patrol base inside the Cetina River Canyon ;
– the preparation of the protocol that will regulate the activities of the Eco-Patrol (designed with the help of public institution Sea and Karst that already performs ranger services in the canyon);
– Sunce association will prepare an educational program for the Eco-patrol, including education on waste collection, sorting, and monitoring protocols.
