Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative

In support of BeMed’s overall objective of tackling the challenge of a plastic-free Mediterranean, the project consisted of disseminating good practices in plastic waste management and implementing alternatives in order to change the behavior of society and the tourism industry, particularly with regard to the unsustainable use of plastics. The main targets of this initiative were shipowners and recreational boaters, managers, employees and customers of water sports companies, tour operators, municipalities, port and marina authorities.

Main results of the project:

The aim of the project was to disseminate good practices regarding plastic waste management and to implement alternatives in order to change the behavior of society and in particular of the tourism industry towards the unsustainable use of plastics. To achieve this, the association organized its project into three activities.

  • information, awareness-raising and best practice sharing workshops on beach and sea cleaning;
  • the distribution of leaflets on good practices and information, recycling bins, masks and reusable bottles.
  • a broad communication campaign covering each of these events;

As the level of knowledge about the risks associated with plastic pollution in Cyprus is limited, most of CSTI’s activities focused on raising awareness and providing information.

These activities to raise awareness among the population and stakeholders in the tourism sector have been successful. A network of committed stakeholders consisting of water sports companies and small cruise companies has been formed to support CSTI and get involved in a long-term project to reduce plastic pollution.

During the workshops, the association provided guidelines to participants on how to address the problem of marine plastic pollution. This made it possible to find alternative and sustainable solutions to single-use plastic, such as the use of reusable bottles.

Plastic recycling bins, bottles and reusable masks offered at events encouraged participants to get involved in concrete actions.

Each event was the subject of a communication campaign. The events were visible on social networks or in the regional press.
