During the VIII International Sandy Beaches Symposium (hosted by IMBBC-HCMR, Crete, Greece), the BeMed action “Networking against plastic pollution” was officially launched.
A keynote speech was given and a hands-on workshop was led by Dr. Salvo (Surfrider Foundation Europe) to introduce scientists to the multiple facets of a beach clean-up: from scientific data collection, to awareness raising, to lobbying. Natalia Roumelioti (SOS Mesogeio), a contact established during the BeMed meeting in Monaco in April 2018, gave a presentation on a focal case in Greece, including the calibration of data collection to the Mediterranean area. The initiative was therefore presented to scientists from all around the world (Greece, Poland, Portugal, Thailand, Brazil, Uruguay, Italy) working or interested in plastic pollution.
