Plastics Health Risks Environment

Club des Activités de Plongée de Bizerte

The objective of the initiative carried by the “Club des activités de plongée de Bizerte” (Bizerte Diving Club) is to reduce pollution by plastic waste that invades the beaches and coasts of the region of Bizerte in Tunisia, including raising awareness of their adverse effects on health and the seabed, and to implement activities to clean up and recover waste.

In order to do this, schoolchildren, high school students and students of the Faculty of Science of Bizerte and the Higher Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture of Bizerte, which are the target audience of the initiative, will explore the seabed to discover the extent of plastic pollution.

After these field exercises, the groups of people involved will design awareness tools and an educational kit to be used for students, residents, shops near the ports, boat owners and visitors to the beaches. During the bathing season, a tent will be set up on the beach to collect, count, sort, clean and recycle plastic waste, but also to carry out awareness-raising activities with the help of the educational kit prepared beforehand.

Then, a number of young students will accompany the divers of the club and the students, “young ambassadors of the seabed” trained in the framework of the previous project, in actions of cleaning the seabed. After the collection, the waste will be identified, sorted and counted in order to insert the results in a database that will be used in awareness actions or studies. Within the framework of the project, workshops, round tables and seminars on health and environment will be organized to carry out the activities of the action.
