The project will focus on collection and management (reuse/recycling), as well as a major component dedicated to raising public awareness of plastic issues. A major focus of the project will be the repair and recommissioning of a baling press. This project is part of the Galite management plan, but has never been carried out due to a lack of resources and funding. The machine will enable the collected plastic to be compacted by reducing its volume into balls, which will initially be stored on site at the port of La Galite, before being transported back to the mainland by boat.
The project also includes an activity based on the creation and feeding of a database on plastic waste in La Galite. The main purpose of this activity is to better characterise the plastic phenomenon at La Galite, in order to learn more about it during the MAN/APAL co-management activities in place at the site since 2020.
An activity called ‘Plastic Street’ will be set up to raise public awareness of plastic pollution. This is an artistic and educational activity involving the creation of a path or corridor using plastic waste, such as bottles and bags collected from the Galite.
Finally, there will be the installation of small solar shade cloths at the La Galite campsite, made from collected plastic bottles and other plastic materials, giving a second life to the plastic collected on site, and encouraging its reuse.
