Plastic Free Menorca (PFM) is a project initiated by Menorca Preservation in 2020 to combat plastic pollution. This grant supports three main initiatives :
The first initiative is certifying hospitality businesses on the island through Plastic Free Balearics (PFB), educating them on legislation and promoting practices that reduce plastic use. Over 30 hospitality companies have participated, resulting in the removal of over 150,000 single-use products.
The second initiative expands PescArt Menorca (PAM), launched in 2021 to repurpose fishing nets into commercially viable products through collaboration with artists and artisans. More than 700 nets have been transformed into 774 new products. In 2024, PAM will expand to repurpose broken parasols and wetsuits, which currently have no recycling options and end up in landfills.
The third initiative involves using two trommels, manufactured in 2023, during outings with students to achieve four goals: educate students about microplastic pollution, collect microplastics from beaches, analyze the collected plastics to understand pollution better, and use the plastics in the PAM project.
