In collaboration with producers and supermarkets, the organisation Doctor Vet in Community wanted to promote ancient Albanian traditions of food preservation and transport by offering alternatives to plastic, such as wood and terracotta. At the same time, it worked with farmers to bring back the practice of returning milk bottles at the local level. These actions were accompanied by a wider awareness campaign.
Main results of the project:
• Reducing the use of plastic bottles by reintroducing glass containers for milk. 16,000 bottles were distributed in seven regions, with a local refill system.
• Replacing plastic bags with cloth bags or woven baskets. 1,500 bags were distributed, resulting in a 40% reduction in plastic bags in shops. Several municipalities have adopted tax incentives.
• Raising awareness of sustainable practices in the tourism sector. A traditional fair was organised in Tirana, bringing together agencies, restaurants and artisans to discuss plastic-free alternatives.
