The aim of the project is to change the mindset of children but also their parents, teachers and the community. Experience has shown that there is still a gap in knowledge and false mentality towards the “necessity” of single-use plastics. People believe that recycling is enough and the only option whereas the value of reduction and reuse (and even upcycling for awareness-raising purposes) should be promoted.
Building on the success of a previous BeMed-funded project, which was approved by the Ministry of Education and had a significant impact, this new initiative aims to maximize those positive results. It acknowledges that change must also come from parents, who influence household practices and possess the financial capacity to make sustainable choices. The project will conduct a case study with 10 families to raise awareness about the impacts of single-use plastic pollution and educate them on reusing plastics at home, choosing reusable products, and reducing plastic use overall. A guidebook for parents will be created to support these efforts.
The project will also include awareness events in environmentally burdened areas. Collaboration with Greenpeace Greece and their “Meeting at the taps” project will promote the use of free water taps and reduce plastic bottle usage. The idea is to create active citizens who will use the public space and reduce plastic use while acting as multiplicators carrying the message and promote plastic free practices.
