Exit Plastic

Participe Futur

The initiative led by Participe Futur is based on three axes:

  • Environmental awareness-raising of the youth in Palermo. In this context, secondary school pupils will be informed about the problem of plastic pollution. Waste collection events and a land art project will be organized to educate all citizens of Palermo.
  • Raising awareness of boaters and sea users who are directly affected by the marine litter problem. Throughout the 2018 summer campaign in the Mediterranean region, activities will be organized directly on-board ships at anchor or at port. Awareness of
eco-gestures on board (waste management, limitation of non-reusable objects…) and conferences on ports will be among these activities.
  • Finally, starting in Fall 2018, awareness-raising actions will target school children and the public on the French Mediterranean coast.

Main results :

Phase 1 in Palermo:

  • Engaged 150 students with 5 sea trips and created a “monster” sculpture from collected plastic.
  • Conducted 5 beach cleanups and exhibited the plastic monster in a busy area.

Phase 2 (Palermo to Southern France):

  • Interacted with 27 boats to share best practices.
  • Collaborated with fishermen and divers.
  • Collected sea waste and educated eco-volunteers onboard.

Phase 3 (Southern France):

  • Held 8 school sessions and 5 student-led cleanups.
  • Organized 5 public beach cleanups and screened 2 short films about the project.
