Plastistop I

Association Jlij pour l’Environnement Marin AJEM

The local initiative, “PlastiStop”, is based on several elements:

The 1st component involves organising several clean-up and litter picking campaigns to reduce the amount of plastic poured in the Mediterranean. These campaigns will be implemented at three levels; on beaches; in shallow coastal waters, with young participants equipped with a snorkelling kit in order to instil a conservation culture and educate future advocates of the marine environment; and with deep sea campaigns in the most vulnerable areas (coral reefs, caves, palm leaf pound traps in Mellita).

The 2nd component of this initiative is the installation of a range of plastic collection equipment (boxes, dustbins, 10lt cans) in order to address the current lack of such facilities.

The 3rd component concerns the training of 10 people (5 fishermen and 5 youngsters) who will be future ambassadors of the Med and will raise public awareness and ensure the sustainability of the initiative in coordination with the association.

The results :

  • Organisation of 6 clean-up campaigns, bringing together 486 volunteers and collecting 839kg!
  • Participation of 12 schools in a drawing competition, which led to one child per school joining the association.
  • Distribution of sorting bags to the residents of Mellita.
  • Organisation of a seminar on the transmission of know-how and good practice by fishermen, local associations and public stakeholders, attended by 113 participants.
  • A booklet of recommendations sent to the Ministry of the Environment’s officer in charge of relations with associations.
  • Installation of sorting bins and containers on beaches and 2 fishing ports, collected by AJEM.
