In Lebanon, all kinds of plastic waste litter the coastline and the sea. The Lebanese coastline is littered with the remains of nylon fishing nets, but no organisation working in the country is focusing on this problem.

The aim of this initiative is to raise awareness among fishermen of the consequences of discarding nylon nets at sea or on the shore, and to implement the collection and recycling of abandoned nets.

Results:

  • Organisation of 5 awareness-raising workshops for 100 fishermen on the dangers of ghost nets for flora and fauna.
  • Distribution of fishing net repair kits.
  • Deployment of wooden containers in ports to collect used nets, with weekly collection and cleaning of the nets.
  • Purchase of a machine to shred the nets. The shredded nylon is then sent to a recycling plant.
